A New Zealand Airman remembers
his experiences as a POW in World War 2
60 Years ago today!
"The morning of November 6, 1942
dawned like most other autumn days in East Anglia.
Damp, cold, muddy, overcast and very drear.
The Nissen Hut we called home smelt of old socks and
stale beer.
Breakfast was sausages.
Again.
99 percent stale bread. One percent fat.
They tasted of old socks.
Little did I know that that the next time I woke up
I would be lying alone in the wreckage of my fully loaded 4 engined heavy bomber
on a French hillside with my pants on fire."
Galbraith Hyde
