A New Zealand Airman remembers
his experiences as a POW in World War 2
60 Years ago today!
By morning I had emerged from the forest and was back in some quite
rich farming country, fairly well wooded and quite steep.
I moved through this all day keeping away from habitation and roads as best I
could.
By evening I was starting to feel pretty hungry so I picked out a
solitary farmhouse and there asked the woman for food.
She took me in and sat me at a table that was cut off
from direct line of sight of the door by a wooden screen,
and there supplied the inevitable terrine, bread and cider.
While I was gratefully eating I heard someone come to the door.
The women went and I heard a conversation in halting French on
the visitors part.
The visitor departed and by peeping around the screen
I could see the back of a German soldier.
This gave me a queer feeling as it was the first sight of the enemy
at close quarters.
