A New Zealand Airman remembers
his experiences as a POW in World War 2

60 Years ago today!

" I abandoned my plans about asking for a place to sleep

and took to the hills again to put some distance behind me.

Tried sleeping under a hedge that night
but with frost forming on my jacket
started walking again.

The next three or four days continued in this style.
Succession of cider apples and scrounged food
sleeping mainly in haysheds and working steadily
in the direction of Rennes.

I decided that it was probably safe to return to the roads.
Little country roads, nothing big.
I was then able to fix my position by the signposts at crossroads
and the use of my handkerchief map, also part of the escape kit.

I  found I was to the north west of Rennes at a small village.
At the top of the rise was a little old cafe
and leaning against the wall was an unattended bicycle.
Fairly old and battered looking
but not locked up!

I leaped on and set off down the road at a cracking pace!

This battered old bike was to take him all the way across Northern France
for the next 4 weeks.
