A New Zealand Airman remembers
his experiences as a POW in World War 2

60 Years ago today!

"    After a moment or two of checking that I still had two arms,

two legs and my head still on, and no copious blood , I pulled myself
upright against the nose. The aircraft was just over the edge of a small hill
on it's belly pointing downwards, largely in one piece but on fire.
The vision of a lake of fuel on board and four acoustic mines
caused me to move off downhill at a smart stagger.

A couple of hundred yards down the hill I found my way blocked.
I stopped to gather my senses, to throw up
and to discard a pair of underpants.
They had come off badly in the trauma of the crash,
but luckily I was wearing two pairs and my long johns were on top!

I remember thinking to myself as I threw away my helmet and oxygen mask
"well I won't need that anymore".

Time of course is flexible.

We miss the train by moments
the car skids on the greasy road into the guard rail
Slow motion at times. Rapid at others.
Both our friend and our foe, in the re-telling of this story.

The crash, the almighty crack on the head, unconciousness.
We'll go back and fill in the gaps later.

As we begin to piece this together
