A New Zealand Airman remembers
his experiences as a POW in World War 2

60 Years ago today!

"    I remember a terrible tiredness

and a wish to lie down in the heather and go to sleep.

However I managed to drive myself up the hill again
towards  the aircraft. It hadn't exploded yet so I risked it.

It was burning from end to end as I walked around
to see if I could find any signs of my crew.
Nothing.
I concluded that they must have perished in the crash."

                                                                                Galbraith Hyde

This proved to be incorrect assumption.

Four others had survived the crash, but had obviously assumed
from his position through the windscreen and lack of movement
that he was dead, along with the navigator and front gunner.

They legged it off down the hill before he regained conciousness
and  were picked up the next day by the Germans.

Galbraith Hyde remained "on the run" in occupied France
for a further 54 days
