A New Zealand Airman remembers
his experiences as a POW in World War 2
60 Years ago today!
I awoke in the early evening.
After a slice of terrine, bread and a bowl of cider I thanked her
and swollowing a benzadrine tablet set off towards
some quite high forest clad hills which lay to the South East.
I figured that the roads would
all be guarded
and that the Jerry would be out looking.
This was, as I was soon to find out, quite true.
The forest wasn't too thick and there was good star light
and a little moonlight. Soon I came to a forest track and followed this along.
At each branching of the track I would consult
my little button compass from the escape kit
and choose the path nearest to South East.
Soon I realised that when I was walking in the right direction
the constellation of Orion was high over my right shoulder.
From then on courtesy of the great hunter
I was able to check my direction without stopping.
I walked all night."
