Dear Friend

The Birds Australia “Twitchathon” is over for another year!!

Update December 2003
We won the Champagne Race
Fund Raising Prize still to be decided!
See our brief Trip Report
HERE

Once a year Lynda and I attempt to raise funds for Birds Australia, the nations peak ornithological body that has run almost entirely on private support for over 100 years. Although we undertake volunteer work and raise funds for them during the rest of the year we have a strict agreement that we will only twist the arms of our colleagues in the industry to contribute once per year.

Unfortunately for you, today’s the day!

Last years effort was a huge success, with the money raised going to a specific conservation project in the Northern Territory. You've probably seen the amazing stories about the purchase on TV recently. The property, Newhaven, formally a vast cattle station, was bought by Birds Australia and saved for the generations to come. It is home to many very rare and threatened species on the brink of extinction. Excitingly, our team of sponsors raised the most funds of any team in the state in the last Twitchathon!  Your donations have contributed significantly to help establish the Newhaven Project.

A great result, however we personally want to do much better this year with
your support!

This year’s project is a little closer to home for some of us. All funds raised will go to a survey project along the fragile Murray Darling River. A job will be created to analyse the effectiveness of small conservation projects that have gone on in the area over the last few years and help plan for the future. It's really frontline stuff; your money goes directly to the project and not into the general coffers as in some fundraising ventures.

So what’s a Twitchathon you ask!

Birdwatchers from around Australia compete to see how many different bird species they can see in a 24 hour period. By doing so and obtaining Sponsors, we raise funds for this worthy cause. Last years effort took our team out past the Back of Bourke and into the outback of SW Qld.  ( See Outback Trip Report ) This year we are staying closer to home and concentrating on areas we know well. We are also concentrating on raising maximum funds for the project.

Once again our team, The Rylestone Curlews, will consist of Lynda Holmes (Team Leader) Jill Dark & Timothy Hyde.

The 2003  Twitchathon runs 25 - 26th October
If you miss this cut off date,
we will add your donation to next years Twitchathon.

If you would like to contribute a donation
we will add it to the next fund raising Twitchathon!
In 2002 we raised the most funds in the state of New South Wales for this event!
In 2003 we came equal first in the Champagne Race
and hope to win the FundRaising Prize as well.
